If a swim in a cenote is on your Mexico bucket list, you are in for something special. Cenotes are natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater, formed over thousands of years in the limestone bedrock of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ancient Maya considered them sacred. Today, they are among the most magical places you can swim anywhere in the world.
What exactly is a cenote?
A cenote is created when a cave ceiling collapses and exposes the groundwater beneath. Some are wide-open pools framed by jungle, others are hidden in caverns with dramatic stalactites overhead. The water is famously clear and refreshingly cool — perfect after a morning of adventure.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel
- Biodegradable sunscreen (regular sunscreen is not allowed, to protect the water)
- Water shoes for slippery rocks
- A waterproof phone case or camera
Tips for first-timers
The water can be deeper than it looks, so a life vest is recommended if you are not a confident swimmer — most tours provide them. Take your time getting in; the cool temperature is part of the experience. And please avoid touching the rock formations, which take centuries to form.
The best cenote tours to book
Many of our most popular experiences include a cenote swim. The Tulum Day Trip pairs cenotes with Mayan ruins and reef snorkeling, while our Cancún 3 Cenotes tour is dedicated entirely to exploring three different cenotes with ziplines and waterfalls. The Chichén Itzá + Cenotes tour combines one of the New Seven Wonders of the World with a cooling swim.
